2027 Women’s Defensemen
Specific Development
Two disciplines, one registration
Tuesday is a skating day with Carey Tinkelenberg and the HHS skating staff. Thursday is position-specific defensemen work with Brad Marshall and Autumn Conway. Two different coaching groups, all summer, in one program.
Nothing else we run is built this way. Dedicated position-specific summer training for girls is already hard to find in this market — this goes further than that.
Play up front? The same two-discipline program runs for forwards — see Women’s Forward Specific Development.
Tuesday — skating
Tuesdays are about how you move. Edges, stride mechanics, and the skating habits that hold up when a game speeds up and someone is on you. Ten minutes in the room to set the day, then an hour on the ice.
Thursday — position work
Thursdays open with twenty minutes of film. The concept on the screen is the concept you execute on the ice minutes later. Get dressed, come to the video room in gear, see the concept on screen, then walk out and execute it at full speed.
Film before ice is instruction. Film after ice is a debrief. Only one of those changes what you do the following weekend.
What You’ll Work On
Gap control · retrievals · first pass · activation · skating for defenders
- Gap control and defending the rush
- Retrievals and escapes under forecheck pressure
- The first pass and clean zone exits
- Reading when to activate and contribute offensively
- Blue line management, net front, and in-zone battles
- Skating mechanics, agility, and edgework specific to defending
- Decision-making under pressure in live game scenarios
The final week is individual film — your own game tape, reviewed against everything the summer covered.
